Frequently Used Tests for Private Investigations

DNA Detection is a standard test used by Private Investigators. In some divorce cases, or even pre-divorce cases, a Private Investigator is engaged by an attorney or direct client to track activities of a spouse. * Note - only licensed Private Investigators should be used for any surveillance work as they are familiar with best practices and local laws *

A Private Investigator will then determine whether DNA Testing of garments, household items or other objects would strengthen your case against a spouse, when the time and/or need arises. DNA Detection provides a report which indicates whether male or female DNA is found on an object. The Chain of Custody cannot be confirmed by the laboratory in these types of DNA or Infidelity tests, but photographs of evidence, date and time of receipt of evidence can be noted in PI's files and then tracked to client's movement and PIs report.

It should be noted, that assumptions based solely on an indication that semen is present lead to unnecessary and sometimes incorrect relationship changing decisions. Going one step further and getting the genetic or DNA Profile and then comparing that profile to a known reference sample is imperative for complete Peace of Mind.

Other times, a spouse may believe that a partner is taking controlled substances and they want the partner tested for the presence of drugs. This issue will more likely arise in a Child Custody and/or Child Visitation action. If a custodial parent is using illegal drugs - the non custodial parent should inform the court of their suspicion so that proper action is taken. Drugs and alcohol can be detected in hair, nails, saliva and urine. Each sample has its own requirement in terms of volume and in terms of information available. Usually an inch of hair can advise activity in the last 60 - 90 days - that is contingent on frequency, volume, any hair treatment chemicals used. Urine can only provide information for the last 48 hours of activity. Nails are harder to collect, require more volume than usually collectable (and in most woman nails are not real) - so we do less nail collections but if all else fails, nails are an acceptable method of determining drug and alcohol use.

Spring is definitely in the air these days - so is the wandering Romeo or Juliet in your life.

A Private Investigator will know which test is best used for your circumstances. Most PIs have a local connection with a DNA Lady or Alcohol and Drug testing facility - that is private, confidential and affordable. It is not too expensive to have many of these tests performed but it is best to know which test is more suited to your case. Always access the experts available and their local contacts. Don't trust internet sites that only provide you with an address to go to and get tested - you want to meet and talk to the person who is collecting, you want to know their background - a PI will have a prior relationship with the DNA collectors and D&A specimen collectors and will know who to trust with your private information.

Reciprocal Child Support Enforcement USA and Dominican Republic

The long arm of the law - wow - it really does apply in Child Support Cases these days. As of yesterday, NJ passed a reciprocal agreement with representatives from Santo Domingo to have child support collected on behalf of children either living in the USA and whose parent is living in the Dominican Republic or vice versa, where children living in Dominican Republic and a parent has moved to the United States.

The DHS - Division of Child Support will enforce these laws by following up with Paternity claims made on fathers in either country. Fathers, need to understand their rights and should first know if they are or are not the biological fathers of the children indicated on the child support order. In the United States, you are automatically considered the biological father of the child, if you were married to the mother at the time of birth. An affidavit signed by both you, the mother and the real biological father would be needed to have your name removed from a birth certificate, under those conditions. However, if you were not married to the mother, and if you do not sign an Acknowledgement of Paternity, usually in the hospital at time of birth, then legally the child does not have a father unless and until you sign paperwork. As with anything, if you have a doubt about the Paternity of the child, even though this is one of the most joyous times in your life, it is not wise to sign any paperwork until you have a DNA test performed. Results are available in as little as 3 business days - and then the family can begin to bond with the baby - if results return with greater than 99% Probability of Paternity.

A simple non-invasive DNA Test can be ordered either through the courts or done privately, using an accredited facility and a Chain of Custody DNA collection process. Chain of Custody processing insures that there are no questions regarding accuracy, reliability and participants in the DNA test. Proper government issued identification is required, the legal guardian of the child (usually the mother) is required to sign on behalf of the child and all three participants are photographed. The test is complete and results can confirm or deny whether you are the biological father of a child.

Some families may not want to go through the "assembly line" process associated with Court Ordered DNA Tests - where everyone sits in a room and is called by a docket number to have their DNA collected. Imagine being a new mom, sitting in a room full of other "new" moms and "alleged fathers" waiting for your number to be called and your DNA to be collected. Very little privacy is offered - more like cattle waiting to be slaughtered.

Private DNA Collections can be done by families both here in the USA and in Santo Domingo. Either a local trusted family doctor in Santo Domingo can perform the collection, or if all 3 are on a visit to the USA - all 3 can be tested in a private DNA collector's office. Offices are available in Perth Amboy and Passaic where there is a concentration of Dominican families. Spanish translation is available in Perth Amboy offices.

Your child's birth certificate: If the name on your identification matches the name of the child's parent, then your identification will establish your relationship. If your current name does not match the name as recorded on the birth certificate, as the parent you will need to supply a copy of your marriage or civil union certificate or legal name change.

A DNA Test is often used to confirm you are the biological parent of the child. Have a Chain of Cutody Paternity test performed by an independent, private and accredited DNA Collections facility and have originals sent to the above address.

1) provide your marriage/civil union certificate to show your name at birth,

2) provide your birth certificate to identify your parent, and

3) provide the parent's birth certificate to identify the grandparent.

DNA Tests are also available to confirm the grand parental relationship. Call your local DNA collector and explain the circumstances and she'll offer best case test scenario. Remember that having the proper name of both parents on the birth certificate will not only allow the child to build a foundation but will also provide benefits available to a biological child through both parents.

If you are looking for a certified copy of a record and are:

An executor of an estate: You must supply proof of appointment as the executor.

The legal representative of the executor of an estate: You must supply proof of legal retainer by the executor and proof of the appointment of the individual as the executor. Perhaps your client has "Banked" his DNA so that after his passing - his children can determine if he was really their biological father and therefore entitled to inheritance and other benefits.

The legal repsentative of an individual that is eligible to receive a certified copy of a vital record: You must supply proof of legal retainer by the eligible individual and their proof of relationship.

You are helping a peron receive a certified copy of a vital record they are eligible to receive: You must show your valid ID and a notarized, written release authorizing you to get the record on that person's behalf, OR you can supply a written release from the person you are helping along with a copy of that person's valide photo ID.

In need of a vital record and are not the legal representative of an eligible person: You must obtain a court order directing the State Registrar to issue a certified copy of the record. A subpoena is not sufficient to issue a copy of a vital record.

Intelligenetics Once Again Facilitates Capture of Criminals

Goose Creek, SC - sound like a sleepy little town with wooden rockers on front porches and wheat blowing in the wind. However, both the police department and the local DNA testing facilities have once again facilitated the quick capture of a criminal through the collective efforts.

Goose Creek, SC police recognize the need for a Private Forensic laboratory. The state funded labs are usually over worked, underfunded and in some cases may be not up to par on equipment and the newest accreditations. Whereas, Intelligenetics, has to maintain a strict level of performance in order to maintain their accreditations in the DNA Testing Industry. Accreditation and strict adherence to protocol are what sets most private forensic laboratories apart from the state funded and/or non-accredited DNA sites popping up all over the internet. As with the DNA Lady in New Jersey, when you call Intelligenetics, you are speaking with an owner who has a personal interest in provided the best of care to your case - whether it be a forensic case, a private paternity test or the more intriguing infidelity testing.

Below is a newspaper's account on the recent assistance provided by Intelligenetics to the local authorities which expedited the capture of a bank robber using today's most of to date methodology of collecting DNA.

There is a monstrous backlog at the state crime lab. At times, more than 4,000 DNA samples from crimes across the state are waiting to be processed at the State Law Enforcement Division lab.

A local police department is tired of playing the state's waiting game and has found another way to solve crimes, using their own budget to fund forensic science.

The crime scene is First Federal Bank on St. James Avenue in Goose Creek, which was robbed in May 2011.

In the surveillance video, a man in line shows the teller a note to hand over the money. Crimes like this one happen so quickly, but often take months of police work. Using DNA Forensic evidence, DNA, can speed up the process.

"It's a brilliant science," said Capt. Dave Soderberg with the Goose Creek Police Department. "And it's very exact."

Soderberg and his team take sealed packets from their evidence room, headed not to the SLED lab in Columbia, but instead to Intelligenetics, a private accredited lab in Hilton Head Island. Goose Creek police pay for this testing and get test results back in days.

While the SLED lab is free, the wait time can be eight to 10 months, time Soderberg says the bad guys are out there committing more crimes.

For the past year, the Goose Creek Police Department has funded its own forensics. In the First Federal Bank case, police had an arrest warrant six days after the suspect leaned on the bank counter.

"When he did that he left some of his DNA where his arms made contact with the counter top he left some of his DNA," said Dr. Daniel Dremers, director of Intelligenetics.

So how do police know who left the DNA on the counter? The suspect wasn't the only person at the bank counter. The man in front of the alleged suspect also left his DNA on the counter. Crime scene investigators say that in this particular case, when the robber leans in to show his message to the teller, he is taking away some of the first man's DNA and leaving a lot more of his behind. DNA samples will be a mixture, but most will be from the last man there. Intelligenetics is able to separate Y Chromosomes and develop separate male profiles, as long as the two males are not related.

In this case, police got more DNA evidence from the suspect's sunglasses, which were found outside the bank.

DNA can't been seen by the naked eye, but a good crime scene investigator can collect thousands of microscopic human cells. It only takes 15 to 20 to make a solid case.

"The DNA that we're interested in is on that swab," Demers said.

Demers' job is to analyze the cells people leave behind.

"It could be a handgun and there may be more than one person that's handled the gun and for some reason they think one person might be on the trigger and somebody else be on the magazine within the gun," Demers said.

The DNA is a person's blueprint and is unique to that individual.

"(In this case) it matched our suspect here perfectly," Soderberg said.

Fingerprints are also unique to us. Before DNA testing, police were frustrated when prints were smeared, but that isn't the case anymore.

"Now we know we can wipe or swab those areas and we can get that DNA," Soderberg said.

Not every Goose Creek crime will get this treatment. The department has to decide which cases will get the most bang for the taxpayer's buck. Sodoerberg believes private DNA testing saves money in the long run by getting criminals off the streets quickly and fingering the right suspect.

"It makes sure proof positive that the guilty are guilty and the innocent are innocent which is very important to us," Soderberg said.

The Hilton Head lab has a regional database called "Rodis," which identified a suspect in another Goose Creek case. Police went to the man's house and found a second suspect, the gun used in the crime and stolen goods.

Last year, the department paid $8,000 for DNA analysis. A small sum considering the damage these suspects create and fear they inflect on their victims.

Linda Passarella, this months guest blogger, has contributed the following. Linda is a local New Jersey resident with a keen interest in all things fossil, ancient and unidentified. Linda is passionate about identifying these items and continues to spend her personal time and money on gaining concrete answers to her findings.

“YES” TERRESTRIALS, INDIANS AND COWBOYS “WERE” NEIGHBORS. THE “LENAPE RED RECORDS” THEY ARE “NOT A HOAX” PICTOGRAPHS PICS FOUND IN NEW JERSEY

The DaVinci code is practically cracked. Knowing and telling the truth is the American way and should never be put to a vote; it should be a natural reaction for any intelligent species. My name is Linda Passarella and I am a “studying” New Jersey's Geologist, Paleontologist, Archeologist and I am a Peacemaker. I have been told by the State, as an American, that I am allowed to believe in what I wish to believe about this subject. I respect them highly for this freedom.

With great respect, honesty, and dignity I would like to announce that I have found over 5000 Dinosaur claws with hair, and teeth intact preserved in clay. In addition to Lenape Indian artifacts over 4 years ago with pictures called pictographs. The artifacts are called Petroglyphs and have been aired on TVs History and Nova channels. Petroglyphs are not just in caves and on large mountains but are also on what we see as some ordinary rocks. They have carvings of Terrestrials inside Spaceships and are also tattooed with pictures by the Lenape Indians (Turtle Tribe ”Unami). I have been to my Musuem several times mediating with the authorities to be allowed to show people and tell humankind what I have found. So far I have been treated extremely fair on the Terrestrial circumstances and they are listening with an open ear. My artifacts have pictures of the Turtle, Wolf, and Turkey showing a United Lenape Indian Delaware Nation all on the same artifact. These artifacts are made of (Diagenisis) petrified bone, claw, and teeth from the dinosaurs. DaVinci was not the first person to hide things in his paintings. He most likely got the idea from the Indians and knew about the Terrestrials himself.

Later in history, Rafinesque who had over 50,000 Lenape Pictograph artifacts was shipwrecked along the Eastern Coast near New Jersey and Philadelphia. Rafinesque never was able to get the recognition or credit he deserved in finding our evolutionary answer in the Lenape artwork. He appears in our history books as dieing in poverty being wrong about the Red Records. I have pictures of a Deputy Sheriff, an Astronaut, a Celtic Soldier, 2 pictures of a Christ-like image but it is not a total human face. I have 2 pictures of Lenape Chiefs, one is Chief Beaver a very great and highly respected mediator between the Indians and our Military, and was also enlisted in our own Military. I have another of Chief White Eyes. I have pictures of the globe also showing the states in perfect formation with a couple of past land formations from an aerial view. (How is is that air travel was possible in that time?) I have posted some of the pictures on Weird NJ Magazine website also. I do not wish to attack anyone's religious beliefs but the “truth” is the best religion will unite “everyone”. I believe not just separate groups of people. We need everyone working together in order to be truly a productive, intelligent and lasting species. We need to accept reality no matter “what” it is or what we were brought up with, or we are living lies and no good can ever be accomplished based on lies.

These findings will be a hard one to discredit, and so far no one has tried to discredit it. The truth is important in order for mankind to evolve in a productive way instead of staying stagnant in a way of life that is slowly destroying them.

Why Open The DNA Lady?

With so many uses for DNA testing these days, from the simple paternity test to the more complicated predictive genetics tests, I meet a variety of people from all walks of life. I always get a kick out of the young men and women, who are curious about the DNA testing process because of the TV shows they watch. They want me to call them and say "You are.... the Father". They make light of a very serious situation, but I still get the feeling that these young men and women know the responsibility they are facing. I am not worried about them or the future of their child. They are taking the step today in confirming paternity so that their child will have a proper foundation on which to build a life and to include both famiies in that process. I genuinely sense a maturity in these young moms and new dads that I don't always see in some of my older clients.

When I do make that call, I focus on the miracle of the new baby in their lives and the joy they will experience as new parents. I can feel a little fear, but with the right support and a positive attitude, most of these new parents are happy with the confirmation of paternity and ready to take on the role of "dad", or "poppy", or "da" - I always have to ask what will your baby call you?

There are occasions when I have been asked to lie or stall results. My own personal ethics don't allow me to do anything other than the usual process, that is collect the DNA, submit samples to an accredited laboratory and then notify all adult participants of results. It is hard, because the circumstances may be that the new mom, has not had time to make peace with the results, but if a man willingly participates in a DNA test, then he should be entitled to the results at the same time as the mom.

Our infidelity tests are mostly submitted by middle aged clients, educated but consumed by doubt about a spouse. Thoughts of infidelity interfere with their everyday activities to the point, that as they come into my office, I can feel their relief to finally get this over with. These clients have taken steps to secure a stained item of clothing that presents as suspicious. Although not admissible in court, these test can determine if there is a biological substance present, if there is male DNA or female DNA present and if that DNA matches the client, or in most cases, does not match the client. Dresses, underwear, shirts, upholstery from a car have all been submitted for infidelity testing. I don't offer insight into results, because most clients will only remember what they want to remember - in the case that the results don't come back to their liking. I only offer information on what the labs can test and how they can use those tests to help remove doubt from their minds. Diplomacy and tact are of the utmost importance in these cases, as well as empathy. The ability to diffuse a possible high tension situation, and remain calm does not always come easy but with experience and security in place - I feel comfortable handling these cases.

The Predictive Genetic client is perhaps someone who has been directed by their physician to come in for dna testing, because their current lifestyle is putting them at risk. The physician relies on genetic predisposition testing to "wake up", the client that putting a few healthy steps in place today may possibly allow for more pleasant "golden years". After all, with health insurance expenses sky rocketing - who is going to be able to pay for healthcare? Better to get healthy today, so that costs are limited in the future. Predictive Genetic Tests involve a simple skin prick (similar to a diabetic stick) and within about 2 - 3 weeks some genetic risk information is provided only to the client. (read the GINA act signed by then President George Bush 43) These are private tests and the client is then urged to speak to his/her physician about results and measures that can be taken to prevent, stall or eliminate genetically inherited diseases. I congratulate these clients in taking initiative to modify their behavior. They (or their physician) are enlightened enough to know what is available to them today in terms of DNA testing and they are taking action too.

Patients taking Coumadin, Tamoxifen, Depression and Pain Management medications, Heart Disease and Prevention meds, Plavix, Strattera and Fluorouracil should all be tested to determine if they are poor metabolizers, intermediate metabolizers or ultra metabolizers - information that can be used to determine safe and effective dosage and minimize risk to patient.

The U.S. government is asking more and more of our immigrant families to provide solid proof of their biological relationship. So more often, we receive a call from an individual who wants to know the process of DNA testing between sponsor and beneficiary. They are confused as to how their beneficiary living in Ghana or Caracas or El Salvador will be tested. It is really not that hard or confusing, once I show them our step by step guide. You have to have a bit of understanding of other cultures as well. Not all cultures understand a smile, or the importance of eye contact, or that a price is a price - not a negotiating point. It's all in a day's work and a lifetime of experience with various cultures.

So why did I open the DNA Lady - how could I say no when I have the opportunity to meet young and old, in all walks of life, with all sorts of stories and each one a lesson in appreciating my own life. The successful business owner, and that is what this is first and foremost, a business - must study people effectively, know your own behavior and boundaries and have a clear sensitivity to customers.

My most interesting client is the one who wants his/her child to excel in the right sport. They take the time to have their child's DNA analyzed to determine if their child is right for an endurance sport or a strength sport. Who is the next Victor Cruz, an endurance athlete or the next defensive end - Justin Tuck - a strength athlete?

State Contracts with Private DNA to Capture Criminals Quickly

I have the honor of personally knowing this private Forencis DNA Testing facility in Hilton Head, SC known as Intelligenetics. The office is friendly, kind and most of importantly very thorough. You will often get a polite lady on the phone who will be able to talk you through any questions regarding DNA testing, and, as a professional when she thinks your questions should be directed to the Laboratory Director, she coordinates that conversation, too. A client never leaves without having full understanding of the case and particulars. The proof is in the pudding as they say. Intelligenetics has been part of a local police departments system of profiling and matching DNA from an arrestee to items found at crime scenes. Most recently, in Goose Creek, SC two armed men entered a restaurant, shot one employee and then robbed the restaurant of the day's proceeds as well as other items. The shooting may have been accidental but nevertheless, the victims were terrified. Bad enough to have committed such a horrendous act, let alone to do so on Christmas eve. What kind of evil and desperation in the minds of such men.

The Goose Creek Police have created, with the assistance of Intelligenetics, a forensic DNA database. In this case, a ski mask was found not far from the restaurant. Intelligenetics Forensic laboratory was able to extract and profile the DNA on the ski mask and match it to one of the suspects in the Christmas Eve robbery. It is only 3 weeks out from Christmas Eve, had the Goose Creek Police waited for a State Crime Laboratory to handle the DNA these men would still be roaming the streets and able to commit other crimes. Having Intelligenetics handle the DNA profiling in this case, allows residents of Goose Creek to sleep better at night.

The ability to use a private DNA Testing Facility, to assist in profiling DNA evidence should be a part of every local police department's budget. Leaving the already back logged States Forensic laboratories to handle the more serious felony work (BARRMs plus K to my forensic professor at Kean University in New Jersey!) allows the capture of these petty criminals, who for all we know would get more cocky with time, if not caught. In this particular case, one of the victims was shot in the leg - still painful but not fatal (thank god for his family).

Perhaps, NJ Local Police Departments, at least those in the higher crime areas, should be allowed to bring in a local DNA collector to profile items found at crime scenes in order to match the DNA already loaded into CODIS. Most brick and mortar DNA collection offices, have been trained in Chain of Custody collections and are already providing DNA tests for government offices. A criminal background check and a fingerprint can be collected on the local DNA collector to insure no conflict of interest in a prior life. Similar to the process of vetting substitute teachers, local DNA collectors would be more than willing to undergo a background check in order to be eligible for local, forensic DNA collections from police in our higher, crime cities. While New Jersey has a fantastic, state of the art forensic laboratory - times are tough and bringing in a local DNA collector would only facilitate in the smaller crimes. Below is a cut and paste of the full news article as it appeared in the local Goose Creek, SC "Post and Courrier" and how the local Goose Creek police use a local forensic lab to expedite such cases.

Goose Creek DNA database solves robbery

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Goose Creek police's own DNA database helped solve a robbery that left a Zaxby's employee shot on Christmas Eve.

Christopher Darnell Wilson, 25, of Swamp Fox Lane and Donte Samar Brown, 23, of Jean Wells Drive each face seven felony charges, including six counts of armed robbery, five counts of kidnapping and one count of attempted murder. The robbers barged into the St. James Avenue restaurant just after midnight and took five workers' wallets and cellphones, according to the Goose Creek Police Department.

Police Capt. Dave Soderberg said Wednesday that both Wilson and Brown are felons. After one arrest, the police collected Wilson's DNA and added it to a database that the department started more than a year ago.

File

Brown (left), Wilson (right)

Experts from a Hilton Head Island laboratory, Intelligenetics, matched that sample to DNA found on a ski mask discarded in the nearby woods. Subsequent searches of Wilson's home also turned up valuables taken from the restaurant.

Soderberg said that developing the local database and contracting with a private company has its advantages over the State Law Enforcement Department's lab, where backlogs can delay DNA testing for weeks.

"We were able to get the bad guys off the street two days after sending the sample out," he said. "In this day and age, when witness accounts aren't as credible in the courts, DNA is a wonderful thing."

The Zaxby's had closed for the day when two armed robbers walked in and held five employees at gunpoint. As one of the gunmen frisked a worker, his gun went off and a bullet struck the employee's leg. Investigators don't know whether the shooting was intentional.

"They really took advantage of these people," Soderberg said. "They knew what they were doing, and it was terrifying for the victims."

Wilson and Brown were arrested during the first week of January, and they remained jailed without bail Wednesday.

Soderberg said that Goose Creek police officers routinely ask those arrested for DNA and that they often agree. He wasn't sure how many samples the department had gathered. He added that the database targets "10 percent of the population that commits 90 percent of the crimes" in Goose Creek.

"A lot of departments are not using this to the degree they should be," Soderberg said. "But DNA is so specific; you really can't go wrong."

Unique DNA helps keep New Year's Resolutions

That's right - use your unique DNA to help you get a jump on your New Year's Resolution. If you are over 15, you probably have a New Year's resolution to lose weight. I don't necessarily agree that we all have to be a Size 2; but I do agree that a healthy weight contributes to a more healthy life style and thus a happier individual. What? OK, if you are overweight according to the Body Mass Index and you have been struggling with diet and exercise, perhaps it is your genetic make-up contributing to the extra bit of giggle in your wiggle.

I remember taking a weight lifting class in th early 1990s and asking the instructor on how to get my abs flatter - even back then at 115 pounds - I thought I had to improve my appearance - which is why today I don't think we all need to be a size 2 but we do need to be happy with our size and healthy. Anyway, the very kind Physical Education teacher told me "you're fighting genetics" - just keep lifting weights and without explanation he moved on to the next student - I didnt' find him to be very motivating and I never took weight lifting again. The thought that I was "fighting genetics" gave me no incentive to continue to lift weights and go for that flat, tight ab look. At the same time I had an employer who was a weight lifting buff and he insisted if I did situps and leg crunches I would get that flat ab. It never happened.

However, today, with the onset of inflammatory diseases, hypothyroidism and just plain aging I think I have a better understanding of what the Physical Education teacher was saying. And today, we can perform a non-invasive DNA collection and test for your genetic predisposition. Do you have an increased endurance capacity? Then a sports physician or trainor might recommend specific supplements and/or exercises to help you over come what is inherent in your DNA.

Perhaps your muscles are more likely to have increased abilities in sports requiring strength and a good consult with a sports physician can educate you on best diet/exercise/supplement/vitamin combination to reach your goals. Your DNA has the code to how your body was made and how it will perform.

If your bones have an impaired ability to absorb calcium or Vitamin D, then you are putting yourself at risk of injury if your goals have been focused on intensity rather than duration. Increase in exposure to sunlight - especially during the winter months in the Northeast (with sunscreen, naturally) will help you absorb some real Vitamin D. And as we have learned over the last 5 years, the original Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamin D has increased - please check with your physician after you have your Personal Genetic Profile completed so that he/she can interpret and advise you on what is best for your body.

Lipid Metabolism, Folic Acid Metabolism, Iron Absorption and Storage, Salt Sensitive Hypertension, Alcohol Metabolism, Caffeine Metabolism and Gluten Tolerance - if you have dieted at some point in your life - you have heard these terms. Non Invasive DNA Testing can determine your best course of action on reaching your goals in 2012.

To determine your Body Mass Index, use the following:

Using an average Resting Metabolic Rate of 655 (*) - follow the formula below and add your own information to obtain your maintainance caloric intake:

655 PLUS (4.35 times your weight in pounds) PLUS (4.7 times your height in inches) MINUS (4.7 times your age) = ________ - is the total number of calories your body requires on a daily basis to maintain your current weight.

If you want to lose weight, you need to create a deficit or decrease your caloric intake or increase your calories spent (via exercise that increases your metabolic resting heart rate).

(*) RMR or resting metabolic heart rate determines how many calories you should consume each day to properly maintain your body's functions and still lose eweight. Your body needs a specific number of calories each day for basic functions like breathing and cell repair.

This is an average formula - if you are a member of a gym, or thinking of joining a boot camp - get your DNA Profile done ahead of time (4 week turnaround time) so that your coach knows exactly what type of workout will produce fastests results. We all know that fast results creates motivation. If you are able to get your DNA profile done in the first week of January, start your boot camp or exercise regime - just about the 2nd week in February, when you have loosened up your muscles, increased your lung capacity through some low impact aerobics and perhaps added some lean muscle mass - your DNA Profile will be returned and will assist you over the next coming months in keeping your New Year's Resolution. As you move into February, you are in better condition to really start training in a manner that your body will respond positively.

Depending on your budget and your commitment, you can test for one gene or you can test for 100 genes. Obviously the more genetic information collected, the more detailed a report can be produced and targetted to your needs.

DNA Testing in the Tri-State Metropolitan Area

One would think because of proximity (closeness), that a simple trip across the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel, or the Goethals Bridge and you could get a Private Paternity Test.

In the State of New Jersey, you can get a DNA Test done for private reasons, without a lawyer, doctor or any other official. Call your local DNA collector, set up your appointment and you can receive a Court Admissible document and/or Find Out First Paternity Test. In the State of New York, however, there are antiquated (outdated) laws still on the books that regulate DNA testing. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) regulates DNA Testing - whether for a diagnostic (medical) purpose or for a simple Paternity test. So if your identification indicates you are a resident of New York State (from Albany down to Brooklyn), then you are required to have a prescription and proper government issued identification to obtain a Legal DNA Test.

If you want to have a Paternity Test done this holiday season, and you only have New York identification, call your primary care physician as soon as possible and ask for a written doctor's prescription stating the names of the DNA test participants - usually child, mother and alleged father - and, very important - have your primary care physician clearly state - that it is OK for the lab to release results to you - the patient. It is also no necessary to test the mother of a child to confirm paternity of a child. If your doctor is unfamiliar with the NYSDOH regulation, we will be happy to call your doctor with information. Please be able to provide us with your doctor's name and phone number and the names of the participants in the DNA test.

On the other hand, non-NY residents, that is resident of New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and virtually every other State, have the ability to obtain a DNA Paternity test with just one phone call. The DNA Lady can set your appointment in one of our convenient collection sites across the Tri-State Area or across the United States - usually on a day's notice. Newark DNA Tests - done conveniently Monday through Saturday - right near the court house. Trenton DNA Tests - done conveniently in a private office - parking in front- major transportation within two blocks.

From DNA Testing in Paterson - to DNA Testing in Flemington - call The DNA Lady and she will set you up immediately. We understand that Paternity Tests are still a private matter - only the legal guardian of minor children need to provide identification to allow us to perform the non-invasive (no needles) DNA Test. New mothers need not be standing in line in a court house, holding baby and essentials, waiting for her turn to have a DNA test performed. Our Find Out First Paternity Tests take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

For residents of Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern Connecticut - mobile DNA Testing is your best bet. A mobile DNA Collector will come to your private home, ask you to provide photocopies of your identification, perform a non-invasive DNA collection (no needles) and 3 days later call you and email you with results and then follow the call/email up with a hard copy. PA and CT DNA Tests - are also not regulated by the Health Departments and can be done on a Court Admissible Basis (in case you later on decide to use test as evidence in Court) or on a Find out First Private paternity test basis.

You will receive a copy of the DNA Tests, including the genetic markers tested that determined with 99% assurance that you are the biological father of the child or not. A DNA Test is very easy to understand - if you are the biological father of the child the results will read greater than 99% Probability of Paternity - if you are not the biological father of the child - the result will read 0% Probability of Paternity All DNA Testing companies use the same genetic markers to determine human relatedness - if you have taken a test with another lab and want to double check the test results - have one person's DNA profile done (half the price of a DNA test) and match those genetic markers to one of the participants in the original DNA Test.

Child Safety Ideas for the Holidays and Beyond

Did You Know?

According to a research review conducted by the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council:

· CPR skills retention begins to decline within a few months after a participant is trained and progressively decreases for about a year.
· Less than half of course participants can pass a skills test one year after training.

With so much going on in your life and the life of a child, it is no wonder that CPR skills are not retained. Feedings, diaper changes, meeting new family, rescheduling all your old responsibility to fit the child's schedule - sleep - who has had a solid nights sleep this year?

It is well worth the time and effort, to review your skills and perhaps meet up with some new mommies to hear the latest buzz on child care.

For more information on a local New Jersey Infant or Child CPR class contact:

During your Child or Infant CPR refresher course, why not take the opportunity to create a Child Safety Profile for your little one. Along with birth certificate documents, marriage records, and other important identifying paperwork, a Child Safety Identification Profile is just one additional tool to safeguarding your child - using today's up to date technology of DNA profiling. A local DNA collector will come to your Infant or Child CPR class, perform a non-invasive DNA collection on your child, photograph the child and then ask for some identifying information. A week or so later you will receive a CSI Certificate that contains all of the information but most importantly the CSI certificate will contain a genetic profile using the same genetic markers as local authorities would to identify a person. Unlike the Child Fingerprint Cards which expire with a year or so of release, the CSI genetic profile lasts a lifetime. In the event of an emergency, you have a document to have over to the local authorities to help locate or identify your child.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE AFFORDABLE AND FLEXIBLE IN-HOME INFANT AND CHILD CPR and First Aid TRAINING.
WE'LL BRING THE CLASS TO YOU.

CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY TIPS

Create a safety party and gather your family, friends, babysitters, nannies and host a class. We come to you! Makes a great gift idea! As prepared as you think you are and despite precautions, children can still get in trouble!

Here are some standard Christmas Tree Safety Tips from your local CPR trainer

1.Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources.

2.Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways.

3.If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and is labeled as fire resistant.

4.Only use indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outdoors.

5.Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets.

6.Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs.

7.Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house.

8.Never place lighted candles on a tree or near any flammable materials. Imagine at one time we all did this!

9.Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. I know my cat finds these low hanging tid bits great fun when no one is around - next morning someone inevitably steps on our precious ornament.

10.Do not hang popcorn chains and candy canes on the tree when small children are present. They may think that other tree ornaments are also edible.

Safety, Safety, Safety - it's like location, location location - always consider what is best for your child before making changes in your home or life. A CSI profile is also a good tool for loved ones who may be suffering from alzheimers or other degenerative diseases that may cause temporary loss of memory.

Examen de ADN

If you are entitled to Social Security benefits, or your children are entitled to Social Security benefits and you require proof of Paternity, Maternity, Grand Paternity or siblingship, Examen de ADN can be performed and is accepted as proof. Below is the new Social Security website in spanish.

Often times, a U.S. government office will request a parent or guardian to provide legal documentation of a biological relationship in order to establish eligibility for benefits. Families that have been moving around, documents not in English, documents not updated may need assistance in providing paternidad, maternidad or other biological relationships. Today, there is a population probably entitled to benefits but have been unable to communicate or effectively understand eligibility so the Social Security Administration put together a Spanish site. Use the below link, to determine your eligibility. If Examen de ADN is necessary please call your local DNA collector for details.

Man Gets Refund on Child Support Payments

The following is an excerpt from an Australian news article, that prompted me to think - how many men would go running to their nearest local DNA Lady collection center, if they thought there was a possible refund? The cost of the local DNA Lady's test, could not possibly equal the refund, if the child happens to not be yours.

Quote:

A woman has been ordered to pay back $13,000 in child support payments after DNA tests confirmed he was not the father of her 14 year old son.

UNQUOTE

The "alleged" father took the child in for a DNA test, because the paternal grand mother continued to make observations that the child did not look like anyone else in their family. Prompted by memories of a compromising position the man came upon with his wife and a neighbor years ago, he decided to find out for himself.

After confirmation from an accredited DNA collection facility, the man then returned to the equivalent of family court in Australia and asked that his child support payments be stopped. The magistrate was so discouraged and outraged by the mother's fraudulent claims of paternity, that not only did he stop further child support payments, he demanded that the mother repay this man all monies he paid over the years, after a bitter divorce.

Some would bet any amount of money, that the aunts and grandmothers on both sides of this family recognized long ago that this child was not fathered by this man but there had already been enough conflict through the divorce, that no one wanted to create any more problems or be considered a "budinsky".

Now, 14 years later, who is the real victim in these situation - THE CHILD. There is no greater bond than that between a father and child - now how do the ADULTS explain to this child what they have done? How do you tell a 14 year old boy, who has played catch with his dad, gone to cricket or other sporting events with his dad and who relished every minute of the child visitation time w ith his dad - that this is not his dad. Hopefully, a proper child psychologist will be brought to handle the situation and done so on an age appropriate level.

Does this remind you of anyone in your family? Have their been family rumours about a child in your gatherings that no one is bothering to confront? The longer the myth persists the harder it will be to reveal the truth to the child, the family and to everyone else involved. Most men in this situation react with true hurt - they do no want to give up the relationship with the child - but know that every child has the right to know who their biological parents are irrespective of the relationship between parents.

Today, more and more men, are taking children in for Paternity Tests. Although having the mother included in the test provides a more conclusive result, it is not necessary to have the mother tested, to confirm Paternity. DNA Tests are non-invasive, a simple cheek swab is all that is needed to create a DNA profile.

If it meant that you would be repaid child support payments made over the last XXX number of years - would you take your child in for a Paternity Test? Would confirming/denying Paternity relieve you of the doubt you have carried for this time or would confirming/denying Paternity hurt you to your very core. The MOPO effect we see on TV is not what the real men are doing in these circumstances. Real men are hurt, their families(grand mothers, aunts, uncles) are disrupted, they are emotionally scarred by careless women, who either can't count or didn't listen during biology classes, or perhaps saw a bigger jackpot by naming the wrong father.

The moral of the story is Find Out First - get a Private Paternity Test(PPT) and remove lingering doubts and family whispers. Everyone in the long run, will benefit by knowing the truth from the beginning.

Benefits of Private Paternity Testing

Private Paternity Testing (PPT) has been available to consumers for years. However, well meaning, doctors, lawyers, birth certificate registrars tend to push clients toward Paternity Testing through family court. A legitimate, PPT center offers the same test, in most cases, by the same laboratory as a State funded paternity test and provides a faster response times in a kinder more personal atmosphere. The result is that all family members are relieved of unnecessary days off from work or school and the family can bond immediately with the child, without fear of doubt about paternity.

Imagine being a new mom, for the first or even second time and having to stand in a court room and "claim" that someone is the father of your child. New moms are tired, stressed and should really just be concentrating on taking care of the new baby. In the case, where both mother and father are on state assistance, then maybe a court room is their only option. If one of the parents, is employed it may be in their best interest and the interest of the child, to have a Private Paternity Test (PPT) in order to insure all dollars available are given to the child. Most PPT centers are able to work with parents on payment plans.

If the mother of a child is receiving cash assistance from the State, then only the first $100 of child support ordered by the court - actually goes to the mother and child. The remaining funds are given to the Department of Social Services as pay back.

So, in the end, everyone would benefit from a PPT, as long as the alleged father will cooperate and wants to be supportive of the child. In the case, where the father doesn't want to support the child, and a mother is forced to go the route of Family Court, then if the PPT was done on a Court Admissible Paternity Test basis, the mother already has the evidence she needs to obtain child support.

The advance in technology and the competitive nature of the industry has allowed PPT centers to offer very affordable pricing on Paternity Tests. The only word of caution is to make sure you are working with someone local and someone you can return to with quesitons about the test. Most PPT centers do not expect a credit card payment on the phone. Final word of caution is to ask about accreditation carried by the PPT labs. Do not use a non-accredited paternity test - it is not worth the paper it is written on.

DNA Testing for Paternity

Most any 12 year old child that enters my office, knows what a DNA Test is about. We remove any signs related to Paternity in order to allow the parents some dignity however, sex education in schools, movies, TV, games or friends - a 12 year old is able to connect - DNA with "who is my father?". That is why I'm always surprised when an adult gets results they did not expect and then get angry with me. Sort of don't kill the messenger situtation. When there are two adults and one child participating in a DNA Test to confirm or deny Paternity - one of the adults knows the truth in the situation - the other is in denial.

There is another phenomenon and that is the person or person(s) who believe that DNA "Testes" are free. Even if done by Maury or family court - DNA Testes are not free. A late night caller plugs into a search engine "Free DNA Tests" and of course, lands on our page. Then call asking if we do "free DNA Testes". This is the segment of the population who also expects free education, free healthcare, free medicine - here's some free advice - get a job, get a life, go back to school and learn English. One has to feel sorry for this population otherwise one would track them down through one of the many private investigators who legitimately use our tests and issue warnings about nuisance calls.

DNA or Deoxyribonucleic Acid or the genetic material found in the nucleated cells of your body. A person receives half of his/her genetic material, or DNA from his/her biological mother and the other half from his/her biological father. DNA is the same whether in your blood or your saliva and today's technology allows us to collect cheek cells from mother, father and child to confirm Paternity or Maternity. Today most labs are using PCR Based Analysis which amplifies specific areas of DNA (loci) in search of the STRs (short tandem repeat units) of DNA. Each person has two sets of the repeating or STRs known as allelles. The numbers listed on a DNA Paternity Test represent the number of times the proteins (GATC) repeats at that specific allelle. If a tested man does not have obligate paternal allelles at three or more loci, he is excluded as the biological father of the child. Rarely, an alleged father will not have the obligate paternal allele at one or two loci. The laboratory would then require additional analysis to determine whether the alleged father is excluded or not. All the more reason, to use a community based DNA collector - so that you can return to that office and ask questions about the DNA Test results.
